Happy birthday Eli!

There will always be two things that we’ll remember on on the 20th of September, Eli’s birthday and Braai Master. Donné sat on the couch and watched TV while the contractions got closer together, and it was during Braai Master that it was suddenly time to head off to the hospital to meet our baby boy. And today he is one, special, precious and wonderful.

Getting some help from big sis to open those presents

He got sand pit toys so that he can enjoy his new sandpit (and a noisy book which he loves)

Ice cream time…Grace got an ice cream, Eli got a cone (which he does seem to really enjoy)

But don’t worry, he also has a chance to eat some ice cream. Grace was 15 months before she had a chance to eat some ice-cream

Pyjama day

Grace’s school outing for the last day of school was cancelled due to bad weather, so they had a pyjama day. One thing is for sure, getting her ready in the morning is much faster. She started her day in her pyjamas, went to school in them and had a play date in them.

Pyjamas ready to go!

Mom, I promise you, I’ll put these back when I’m finished looking through this drawer

Learning to walk

Eli is getting better at walking every day. One of the things that he loves is when we clap for him and say “Yay!” – he then claps along, very chuffed with himself. The video is from yesterday, and today he was letting go of things and walking nearly half way across the lounge.

A lollipop is a lollipop

Duncan: Grace, are you enjoying your lolly?
Grace: It’s not a lolly, daddy, it’s a lollipop
Duncan: Well Grace, the word lollipop is made of two parts, lolli and pop, so for short we can call it a lolly. It’s the same thing Grace, a lollipop is a lolly.
Grace: A lollipop….is a lollipop, daddy. In America, they call it a lolly, but in South Africa we call it a lollipop. And we’re South African, so it’s a lollipop.

The big laugh

Eli, being a boy, thinks things like shooting eggs out of your mouth and throwing things off the table, are well….just hilarious.

Catching a nap

Grace caught a nap (and some flies) on the way back from a visit with Keren & Nick.

Why do chickens sit on their eggs?

Grace: Dad, why do chickens sit on their eggs?
Duncan: They need to keep them warm so that the babies can grow in the egg.
Grace: No silly! They sit on them because they don’t have any chairs! Hehehehe.

Grace’s first joke that she came along with on her own. It had me laughing because it took me totally by surprise.

Grace was a great DIY help with the sealing of the sand pit we’re building for Eli’s birthday

Birthday practice

Grace and Hannah had a practice run for Eli’s birthday

Grace the compassionate & Eli the bookworm

Hannah (one of Grace’s close friends) was feeling very sad when she arrived at school today, and Grace was apparently very concerned about her friend, and was kindly asking, “Are you feeling happy now, Hannah?” She does have empathy, and it will be interesting to see how that works itself out as she gets older.

Eli is really enjoying looking at books and is surprisingly gentle. His favourites are the ones which make noise…

Ears & walking

Donné: Grace, what are these? (Pointing to ears)
Grace: Ears…
Donné: And what are they for?
Grace: Earrings
Parents: Sigh

Eli is now talking up to about 5 steps at a time. He’s working on it every day and gradually getting stronger. I think just about everything is there, he just needs to build some endurance and get his head around the fact that he can walk instead of flop over and crawl.
