Overflowing with confidence

There is no doubt in our minds that Grace is thriving at school. She has totally settled in and is loving being at school and engaging with everyone there. Now, when Donné goes to collect her, she keeps on playing as long as she possibly can and doesn't really want to leave. In so many ways she is an entirely different child, overflowing with confidence and wanting to engage with just about anyone who is willing.

She wants to engage with other children, she wants to get involved with activities like ballet, or dancing in front of the xylophone band at the Waterfront, she wants to go and see other extra murals at school……and talking….well, let's just say that she hardly stops.

We are very blessed that things seem to have come together perfectly. The timing of starting school has been just right, and it is wonderful to see her loving life so much.

Why are you staying in Jeffrey’s Bay?

Gramps is coming to visit this week and Grace was wondering why Gogo was not going to be coming with, so she thought it would be a good idea to call and find out why. We get Gogo on the phone and Grace asks, “Why are you going to stay in Jeffrey’s Bay, Gogo?” Gogo tells her a long story about how she needs to stay and look after the dogs and cats while Gramps is on his business trip while Grace listens intently. Once Gogo is done there is a brief pause and Grace says, “Why are you going to stay in Jeffrey’s Bay, Gogo?”

Clearly Gogo does not have a good enough excuse, or at least not one that Grace is going to accept.

Ba-ay

Img_8381_s

Grace went to watch a ballet lesson at school today (they have extra mural activities that happen in the general group/play time), and this afternoon it all came out. She started walking around saying, “Doing ba-ay,” and lifting her arms in the air. Then she wanted her ba-ay shoes….and then her ba-ay clothes……and then music so she could do ba-ay. Looks like we have our first extra-mural lined up.

The queen of the castle

One of the things Grace is learning from school is new ways to play from the other children, and today she learnt a good old favourite. And like so many other things she was on repeat.

"I'm the queen of the castle," over and over, then, "You a dirty rascal," over and over and then together, and apart, and then "I'm a dirty rascal," and did I say over and over?

We were outside and Grace was swinging. She turns to Donné and points and wags her finger, "You must pack me a healthy snack tomorrow, no sweeties." Now this is quite a surprise, as Grace is pretty much all about the sweeties….although yesterday her definition of a "health snack" was a hot cross bun and a chocolate brownie. And then, continuing with the finger wagging, she says, "Must tell mommy to pack me a healthy snack tomorrow." Ah, so Grace is just channeling a teachers voice.

Prayers & diving

At supper tonight I said, "Grace, will you please say thank you for the food for us?" (saying Grace, please say grace just doesn't really work). We hold hands and she says, "Father God, thank you this wonderful food, Amen." (with emphasis on the WONderful).

She had a super good swim with Charlene today – diving to the bottom of the pool to pick up two rings and a fish. Her confidence in the water is super high, and at least three times today she jumped or dived into the water while Charlene was busy with Lucca (even though she knows she should be waiting). She was jumping in from the side and swimming independently back to the step, doing humpty-dumpty's and turning around to grab the wall on her own, and looking like she will at least be able to save herself if she does happen to fall into a pool.

January, February, March….

Grace is definitely learning things at school, and one of them is the month’s of the year. They sing the calendar song, and today it got stuck in her head. She was running around this afternoon singing, “January, February, March, April, Marry, June, July…” (yes, “Marry” not May, no matter how many times Donné corrects her….who knows). Over and over and over she sung, happily enjoying the song going around in her head.

Screaming

Grace has been screaming quite a bit lately. Part (probably most) of it is definitely playing with sounds (not that it is more palatable that way, but at least she is learning), and part of it is frustration when we don't immediately understand what she is trying to communicate to us, and part of it is just plain tantrum.

So Donné decides, "Let's put some boundaries in place for this. Grace, if you want to scream you can go scream outside." Grace does an immediate about turn, runs down the passage, opens her door, runs into the garden…..SCREAM.

Going outside may never be the same….we might need to be a bit more specific with those boundaries.

Birthday!

The first words out of Grace's mouth this morning were, "It's weekend! Go to Diya's birthday party! Go to Isabelle's birthday party!" Yes, two birthday parties today….

Happy birthday Diya!

Grace spent quite a lot of time in the music room playing drums, piano and guitar. Her drum playing was quite impressive, but she was not compliant enough to let us take a video
