Going PE

Grace is ready….she has been ready just about all day. Maybe the excitement is why she did not want to sleep today. When we said we needed to go to Tyger Valley quickly she said, "No going Tidy Baggie, going PE," (which Grace pronounces as "pee" not P-E).

Tomorrow we fly to PE for the start of our holiday (well, I'll be working until Friday, but Grace and Donné will be on holiday). Grace is really keen to get going so I had to explain to her what will be happening until we get there. I ran through the whole process, and this is how Grace summarises it…

"Sleep."
"Morning!" (said in her chirpy, "Good morning," voice)
"Cander" (which means she gets to have a chocolate from her advent calendar)
"Going PE!!!"

We will be in PE from tomorrow until Friday, and then spending time at my folks house in J-Bay until Christmas. After that we will probably be between the two until we come home on the 30th.

Gingerbread houses

Today was our last get together for the ladies of Duminy Street.  I really enjoy our get time together as friends.  Its not usually a time of deep meaningful chats (because its filled with children and busyness) but it is a place to come together with people who know me, who share history with me and where I feel I can just be me. So thank you lovely ladies I really see and appreciate all 3 of you.

We hopefully started a new tradition this year that will continue for many years to come. Jack, Caleb, Grace and Aunty Mel decorated and made their first Gingerbread houses. I can't say for sure what was more fun, decorating the walls and roof of the houses or just eating all the yummy sweets (I might vote for eating the sweets) but lots of fun was had by all. I just want to say Thank you Karen for doing all the hard work and making my idea a reality I really appreciate it and Lisa Welman I just want to say that these Gingerbread houses were definitely inspired by your Christmas tradition.

Got Same

Grace has always been very observant, but has started commenting on things that people have that we also have.  It started the other day when she spotted a guy who had the exact same shoes as Duncan.  She pointed to them and said "daddy got same".  It took me a few seconds to figure out what she was talking about, before I spotted the shoes.

Today while paying at the cashier (yes we were at the shops again!) Grace starts pointing and saying "Gracie got same."  She paused to see if I knew what she is talking about but I obviously was giving her a blank look so she repeated "Gracie got same colour." I took a closer look and realised she was pointing at the cashiers keyboard which is the same beige colour as the one she has .

I am starting to feel like she is testing me to see how observant I am with "got same" scattered randomly among other words and sentences. I am definitely going to have to start taking more notice of things around me and maybe join in the "got same" game.

Graceisms

Some Grace quotes from the day:

Grace reading the Jungle Book: "Cat walking in tree" (pause) "silly kitty"

Grace talking to the cashier at Woolworths : "bye, going to Beedo (Vida)"
Cashier: "what you going to do at Vida?"
Grace: "chino, choc" (Really? I was never consulted on these plans).
Me: Since I was curious what the rest of the afternoon might hold, I asked her "what are we going to do after Vida?"
Grace: "more shopping"
Me: "but we finished shopping, so what we going to buy?"
Grace "nothing"

I guess she was planning to do some window shopping 🙂 – Keren, Aunty Mel it sounds like you may have a shopping partner in the making.

Grace has been discharged

Today was Grace’s last speech therapy session for the year, and it was a great way to end off the year. Today was not just her last session for the year, but also her last session.

Sue did a reassessment and is happy that Grace is speaking at the level she should be. In 7 months Grace has gone from practically not speaking at all, to speaking as much and as well as she should be for her age. Now she wakes up in the morning and starts speaking, and then carries on right until she goes to sleep at night.

Sue has been really impressed with her (and extremely complimentary of her as a child). Grace has made great leaps and bounds forward and has surprised Sue every month from about the 4th visit. And now there is very little left to work on. Donné and I have certainly learnt a lot through the process and are more equipped for the future.

I am so excited to have reached this point so quickly. It is such a blessing that Grace has done well, worked hard and responded to the therapy well – thank you Lord.

In today’s session Sue put a dog paw print stamp on Grace and told her it was her dogs’ feet, and that they had been digging up her garden. This stuck with Grace and every time she would look at her hand and see the stamp she would say, “Naughty puppies, eating up plants.”

If you are looking for a great speech therapist in Cape Town’s Northern Suburbs, contact Sue Rumble – 021 979 5555. She has been awesome and we have been privileged to have met her.

Finishing well

It has been an intense year for me. I have approached my work differently, pushed myself harder and taken more risks. In some ways it feels like my business has taken great leaps and bounds forwards, and it others it just looks like I am taking baby steps.

The great leaps have been in my mental space and attitude. The biggest change has been to switch to an attitude of, "I will make it happen," instead of my old, "I unfortunately don't have time to help you." Yes, this has probably overloaded me, but it has forced me to think differently and to search for alternative ways of doing things.

The baby steps have been contracting some work out and running projects with some other people. These are more than just baby steps, as there is a lot of trust that needs to be built, but they are not (currently) changing the basic direction of the business. They are some of the first steps on a long journey.

All of this has meant less sleep, as well as the need to track a number of different projects at a time.

After an intense year I am really looking forward to a break. Time to stop, to just be, and to switch off. We had a really good restorative break in the middle of the year, and I am looking forward to feeling more energised after the break.

With only two weeks to go I need to finish well. That means pushing aside some tiredness and embracing where I am and what needs to get done. I am looking forward to finishing the year well.

Water fun

For Grace the day started and ended in similar fashions – playing with water. This morning she helped Duncan water the plants and this afternoon she ran around in the sprinkler and when she got bored of that she continued to water the plants, jungle gym, slide and herself.  Pure joy, pure delight!

Jingle bells

December is here and Christmas is nearly upon us, which means it is time for Boney M. I have not heard it in the shops yet, but it is playing in our home…and Grace likes Jingle Bells. In fact, that is the only song that is playing in our home. If the next one starts then Grace starts moaning for Jingle Bells, and now that we have taught her how to go back on the CD player, she just keeps it on repeat herself (well, tries at least).

The last time we went for a swim at the gym we discovered that they are busy upgrading the pools, which means an empty pool and no swimming. We managed to peek over the screens and see the pool empty and all the tiles off, just so that Grace can understand why she can't swim. Today I told Grace we could go to another gym to have a swim – in Grace's words, "New gym. Old gym broken."

Apparently the only way to listen to Jingle Bells is to sit really close to the CD player.

TV + Sleep = Take 2

Grace and I were very lucky to have sushi twice in one week, Monday with the family and today with Mel. We had a great time eating lunch, drinking coffee and doing a little shopping.  On the way home I was hoping that Grace would fall asleep in the car, but no such luck!  I did not fancy going through the nap time ritual,  so I decided to see if I put her in front of the TV if she would fall asleep again like she did on Saturday.  My thinking was if it happened once surely it could happen again and to my joy it wasn't long before little Miss Grace was fast asleep.

It still amazes me when she just falls asleep so easily, I think it's because I still have such vivid memories of going to the Paediatrician, for Grace's 6 week check up, and asking him what to do with a baby that doesn't want to sleep in the day?  After establishing that she was sleeping at night, he said "all you can do is pray" I also remember spending a lot of time in a dark room with white noise playing when she was little. Now at nearly 2 1/2 she falls asleep in front of the TV, I can pick her up put her in her own bed and she carries on sleeping – times certainly have changed

Waiting for Aunty Mel to come and fetch us.  So much fun climbing in and out of the carseat and trying to strap yourself in.

At least this time when falling asleep she assumed a more comfortable position
