Miss You

-263258499

Today Duncan spent most of the day seeing clients in Stellenbosch. Grace and I had a great morning of painting, baking, and cutting paper and gluing the little pieces of cut paper. At lunch time Grace went into the office and came back with an old phone. I asked her who she was phoning and she said Daddy. I asked her what she wanted to tell Daddy and she replied “come home, miss you.” That just melted my heart.

Her progress in her speech amazes me each day. I am so proud of her.

Sore

Grace managed to somehow get a little cut on the bottom of her foot yesterday. Nothing serious if you look at it (just a little more than a scratch), but something very serious for Grace. There have been lots of tears around this little cut. A plaster seemed to help a small bit yesterday, but Grace practically refused to walk on that foot. Fortunately putting shoes on her seemed to help her get over it for a while. Today she seemed mostly fine, but required a token plaster to keep the cut out of sight and out of mind. Getting into the bath has been loads of fun.

Whenever she becomes aware of it she says, "Sore, sore!" which presents us with a new opportunity to learn patience. It is really tricky knowing the boundaries of what is genuinely sore and what is just heightened perception of the wound. Like so many other things, parental discernment is required.

Grace took Jack's scooter for a spin over the weekend. It was the first time she has tried to ride a scooter. She was fiddling around with it, so I showed her where to stand and how to push and off she went. She got it a lot faster than I expected….but then lost is again soon afterwards. She really enjoyed figuring out the little scooter.

I suppose all good things must come to an end!

So after a lovely weekend in Yzerfontein with friends we are back home and I'm definitely not ready for the week.  In the words of Grace "more" – I would enjoy some more time at the beach – luckily December is not too far away.  Thank you Mel for taking such good care of us, we really did have a wonderful time.

Cleaning our toys and warming up in our tiny pool post beach.  Caleb was giving Grace a gentle mini shower and Grace was giving bunny a bath.

A weekend at the beach always involves lots of good food.  Grace didn't want to wake up from her nap, but with the promise of some chocolate cake she soon made her way to the kitchen.

According to Mel the line she is going to remember from this weekend is "Grace keep your pants on " Yes Grace took her pants off many times!

Expansion of love

A friend and I were discussing how it is quite hard to describe exactly why it is that having a family is better than the things one might be able to do if you did not. One way might be to say that life is deeper and richer due to the growing relationships. I liked what one friend said, that our love grows with each new family member. We also grow and develop as the love we learn spreads to all the other parts of our lives too. Although it might be hard to describe, it is something definitely worth living.

“Go Beach Go”

We are spending the weekend at Yzerfontein with friends.  Since the beginning of the week Grace has been saying "go beach" so when she woke up this morning and found out today was the day, she was super excited!  She fell asleep in the car on the way and when she woke up the first thing she said was "beach".

So Grace finally got her wish and her feet touched the beach sand and although the water was FREEZING it didn't deter her from going into the water

More Fun with Keren

Playing with Keren in the garden

Justin found a Hello Kitty video on You Tube and well Grace obviously loved it, especially the part where the two kittys swing!   And as with all things Grace (and probably most 2 year olds) more and more was the order of the day.  My phone definitely DOES NOT have the kitty video on, because I know how that story goes.

Talking about Ke

We are really enjoying Grace speaking. In the few months Grace has been making leaps and bounds with her speech, and the speech therapy has really made a difference. It has been rewarding working with her and seeing the progress that she has made.

Before we took her for speech therapy we did quite a lot of deliberating – backwards and forwards trying to decide whether we should just wait a bit longer, or if there actually was a problem. It is sometimes difficult to figure out whether you are just worried about something when your child does not follow the "typical" path, or whether there is actually a problem. It is really hard to tell, but I guess that is one of the things about being a parent – judgement, and knowing your child. Sometimes we just need to follow our gut, regardless of what other people are saying.

Grace is now putting some words together and making simple little sentences like, "In da bag," "See soon," and "Its a hat." The speech therapist said her language development is at the right level, and if she did not have the dyspraxia she would be putting full sentences together. She is really impressed with the progress Grace has made, and very complimentary about our little girl and how well she works with her.

I am really glad we have been taking her.

Grace got to continue her Keren obsession today. The first word she said this morning was "potty," and the second word was "Ke." She is super happy to spend time with her much loved aunt.

Keren’s arrival

Keren arrived for a visit today and Grace is enamoured. She absolutely loves her aunt and is quite happy for Keren to do everything that she needs done, from reading books through to helping her go to the toilet. Keren also came bearing gifts of Percy Pigs and clothes…particularly a Dora T-shirt which Grace loves.

Keren also brought some Turkish delights from Grandpa and Grace was offered one. She toddled up to the box, and took one pink one and one white one – clearly taking one of each is a genetic trait. Her cuteness made her lucky enough to be able to eat both.

Tomato Thief!

We've mentioned before that Grace LOVES tomatoes, especially baby tomatoes.  This evening at supper time Grace asked me for some tomatoes, I told her I would get her some in a few minutes, I just needed to finish what I was doing.  Apparently a few minutes was not "Now" and when I turned around she had pushed her chair across the kitchen, opened the container of tomatoes and was helping herself!

Grace helping herself to some tomatoes.  I bought that 400g container yesterday and well lets just say Duncan and I have not eaten many of them!

There-you-go now

Grace has started saying a very cute there-you-go which we have been trying to capture on video to no avail. She says it quite a lot so there should be plenty of opportunities to capture is, but all that we can get her to say on tape is "go."

The other word she is saying a lot is "now," which is normally associated with, "No, I don't want to wait, I want it now!" We are definitely in the two's, with more and more independence and defiance.
